Fable Reboot Delayed to 2026, But Developers Promise It’s Worth the Wait

Fans eagerly awaiting the Fable reboot will need to hold on a little longer, as Xbox Game Studios has officially delayed the game to 2026. Originally expected this year, the highly anticipated revival of the beloved fantasy RPG is getting extra development time to ensure a polished experience.

In a new episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, addressed the delay, assuring fans that the additional time will be well spent.

“We are actually going to give Fable more time,” Duncan said. “While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait.”

A Stunning Albion in the Making

Developed by Playground Games, the studio behind Forza Horizon, the Fable reboot is shaping up to be the most visually stunning version of Albion ever created. Duncan praised the developers, pointing to their track record of delivering critically acclaimed, award-winning titles.

“I have unequivocal confidence in the Playground team,” he added. “If you think about their history and legacy for Forza Horizon – the last two games were critically acclaimed, award-winning, beautiful, played great.”

New Pre-Alpha Footage Eases the Wait

While Xbox has been tight-lipped about Fable since its 2020 announcement, fresh pre-alpha footage was revealed during the podcast. The clips showcase lush, flower-filled landscapes, dynamic sword combat, and magical abilities.

Duncan, who has had hands-on time with the game, shared his excitement:

“The quests, boss battles, and magic all felt amazing,” he said. “Genuinely beautiful. It’s very real. Everything you’re seeing here is very playable.”

Balancing Nostalgia and Modern Innovation

The Fable reboot marks the first major entry in the series in nearly two decades, and according to Duncan, Playground Games is dedicated to staying true to the franchise’s charm while introducing modern innovations.

“There are no bigger fans of Fable as a franchise than the Playground team,” he emphasized. “It’s a really fun balance between the game tenets that are true to Fable, and Playground Games’ modern-day reimagining of what Fable can be.”

A Long Wait, But High Expectations

Although Fable won’t arrive until 2026, the new footage and glowing praise from Xbox executives suggest that the wait will be well worth it. Fans can look forward to a breathtaking, immersive, and deeply faithful return to Albion—just with a little extra time in the oven.
