Hideki Kamiya Wants the Virtual Console to Return, but Nintendo Focuses on Switch Online

Legendary game developer Hideki Kamiya has expressed his support for reviving Nintendo’s Virtual Console, but its return remains uncertain due to Nintendo’s focus on the Switch Online subscription model.
Virtual Console vs. Switch Online
The Virtual Console, introduced on the Wii in 2006, allowed players to purchase and own classic Nintendo games from platforms like the NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy, and GBA. It later expanded to the 3DS and Wii U, but was discontinued, leaving fans without a way to buy many classic titles.
Instead, Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) offers a subscription-based model where players can access a rotating library of classic games. While this service expands regularly, some fans prefer the ability to own games individually, as Virtual Console once allowed.
Kamiya Wants Virtual Console on Switch 2
In a recent IGN interview, Kamiya—known for Okami and Bayonetta—was asked about the upcoming Switch 2. He expressed his desire for the Virtual Console to make a comeback, saying:
“As a personal comment, I personally would love to see the Virtual Console rebooted. I would like to ask Nintendo to bring the distribution model back for retro games.”
Despite Kamiya’s support, the likelihood of a return seems slim, as Nintendo continues expanding NSO instead.
Upcoming Switch 2 Details in April
With the Switch 2 Direct scheduled for April 2, Nintendo is expected to reveal more details about its games, hardware, and potential services. Whether the Virtual Console makes a return or Nintendo sticks with NSO remains to be seen.
