Okami 2 Confirmed as a Direct Sequel, Built on Capcom’s RE Engine

Capcom has officially confirmed Okami 2, a direct sequel to the beloved 2006 action-adventure game. The highly anticipated title is currently in early development and will be built using Capcom’s RE Engine, which powers games like Street Fighter 6 and Monster Hunter Wilds.

Okami 2: What We Know So Far

  • Okami 2 is a direct sequel to the original Okami.
  • The game is being developed on Capcom’s RE Engine for modern platforms.
  • Okami 2 was revealed at The Game Awards 2024 in a surprise announcement.
  • Director Hideki Kamiya and producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi have shared early details.

How Okami 2 Continues the Story

The first Okami followed the journey of Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess in the form of a white wolf, as she battled demons using Celestial Brush Techniques. The game ended with Amaterasu and Waka setting sail for the Celestial Plain, leaving room for a sequel.

Although Okamiden (2012) was a follow-up on the Nintendo DS, Capcom confirmed that Okami 2 will directly continue the first game’s story.

Why the RE Engine Matters

Capcom’s RE Engine, first introduced with Resident Evil 7, is known for stunning visuals and fluid gameplay. It has been used in major titles like Devil May Cry 5 and will also power the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds. The studio also hinted that the next-gen Codename REX engine will roll out gradually, with some features integrated into Okami 2’s development.

When Will Okami 2 Be Released?

Since Okami 2 is still in early development, fans will have to wait for more updates. However, the return of the Celestial Brush and Amaterasu’s journey promises to be an exciting revival of the legendary franchise. Stay tuned for future details from Capcom!
